You've Been Placed In Harm's Way. Don't Stay There.

Would you be on shaky ground if an earthquake damaged your home?

While many outsiders and local residents enjoy time spent in California due to the consistently dreamy weather here, our state -- and Glendale specifically -- does experience extreme weather. Most extreme in the state are stretches of wildfires and seismic events.

Living in California means living with the real possibility that an earthquake could cause damage to your property. Do you know if you are covered financially in case your home sustains damage in an earthquake? Let's discuss the complicated matter of earthquake insurance a bit.

You might think that you are protected through insurance if an earthquake rolled into your area. However, the first important note about earthquake coverage to understand is that most homeowner's insurance policies do not include earthquake damage. Generally, you have to add on the earthquake protection or get that insurance through a separate provider.

A 2014 article entitled, "Why Do So Few California Homeowners Have Earthquake Insurance?" lays out the alarming reality that the real risk of earthquake damage is not acted upon by the majority of homeowners in the state. Then only about 10 percent of homeowners had earthquake insurance.

When you line up that number by the fact that, according to the state's non-profit earthquake insurance provider, there is a near 100 percent chance of a 6.7 magnitude quake happening in the next 30 years, it is troubling. Without any coverage for earthquake damage, you would have no valid argument to present to an insurance provider in order to get financial help for the damage to your property.

So what should you do? The logical first step is to look at your insurance coverage you do have. Do you have homeowner's insurance? What does it say (or not say) about earthquake coverage? You will find that you are not covered and, therefore, will want to talk to a provider that does cover such incidents.

Do you have all of the proper and necessary insurance but you are still running into problems with coverage? If you've taken the necessary steps to protect yourself and your family's security with earthquake insurance, it is frustrating and disheartening when a claim is denied.

A denial of coverage does not mean you have no options left. Talk to an attorney with experience in property insurance law who know the steps to take and buttons to press in order to protect your rights.
